Motorcycle brakes: components and selection criteria
Motorcycle brakes bring together the parts that reduce speed and bring the bike to a controlled stop. This category includes brake kits, brake pads and brake shoes, brake rotors, brake calipers, master cylinders, adapters, brackets, hardware, and other related accessories. Every part must match the design and dimensions of the installed assembly, on both the front and rear.
Before choosing a replacement part, check the motorcycle’s make, model, year, exact version, and mounting position. For brake rotors and adapters, verify the diameter, mounting pattern, number and spacing of the bolts, and axle type. For brake pads and brake shoes, check the shape, dimensions, and reference of the removed component. For brake calipers and master cylinders, confirm the mounting points, installation direction, and compatibility with the rest of the circuit.
How to check the right brake replacement part
- Identify the component: distinguish between a brake rotor, brake pad, brake shoe, brake caliper, master cylinder, bracket, or installation accessory.
- Compare the dimensions: use the motorcycle manufacturer’s specifications and measure the original part when necessary.
- Check the installation: verify the side, position, mounting type, and required hardware.
- Consider the intended use: choose the replacement part for the motorcycle’s intended use and replace related components when they show wear or damage.
The braking system works as a complete assembly: a correct individual part does not guarantee a proper installation if it does not match the existing brake rotor, brake caliper, master cylinder, or controls. After installation, check for interference, play, or leaks, and bed in the component according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
