Motorcycle Mirrors: How to Choose the Right Replacement
Motorcycle mirrors let you check traffic behind you without taking your attention away from riding. This category includes mirrors for replacing a damaged unit, renewing the set, or changing the position and appearance of the controls. Before choosing, confirm whether you need the right side, left side, or a pair, since some configurations are sold individually and others as a set.
Compatibility depends mainly on how the mirror attaches to the motorcycle. Check the thread diameter, pitch—for example, M8, M10, or M10 × 1.25—tightening direction, and available space around the lever. Also verify whether the right- and left-hand threads match those on the vehicle and whether adapters or sleeves are needed. Do not assume “universal” means compatible without comparing these measurements.
What to Check Before Buying
- Visibility: the mirror size, stem length, and adjustment range should provide a useful field of view from your normal riding position.
- Mounting: compare the thread, orientation, contact surface, and room needed to tighten the part. Also check that the handlebar and controls do not interfere with adjustment.
- Use: compact designs can change the mirror’s perspective and position, while a longer stem may improve visibility when other vehicle components obstruct it.
- Regulations: if the motorcycle is used on public roads, check that the replacement meets applicable road-use requirements and keep any relevant documentation.
After installing the motorcycle mirrors, tighten the fasteners according to the manufacturer’s instructions and adjust both mirrors with the motorcycle in its normal riding position. Check that they remain secure, do not contact other components, and provide sufficient visibility before riding.
