NGK: a history rooted in ignition

NGK’s story began in Nagoya, Japan, with the founding of NGK Spark Plug in 1936. Its first spark plugs followed in 1937, and the company’s experience in ceramics became one of the foundations of its ignition expertise. Since those early days, the brand has developed components for a wide range of engines and applications.

In 2023, the company adopted the corporate name Niterra, while NGK Ignition Parts continued as the brand for its ignition products. At Motarea, the selection focuses on spark plugs, plug caps and spark plug wires: components that work together to carry high voltage to the point where combustion begins.

Spark plugs for different engine requirements

The NGK spark plug range includes conventional designs and options using precious metals such as iridium or platinum. The electrode and insulator are designed around the needs of each application; spark plugs that look similar may have different specifications.

When choosing, check the part number specified for the engine, heat range, thread diameter and reach, seat type and terminal connection. Electrode gap and tightening torque must also match the manufacturer’s instructions. Switching technology does not replace these checks.

Caps and wires: the connection to the spark plug

The NGK plug cap and spark plug wire family includes straight and angled designs, as well as assemblies combining a wire and cap. Their role is to connect to the spark plug and maintain electrical insulation in this part of the ignition system.

External shape alone is not enough to choose a cap. Check the spark plug terminal, the connection to the wire, the available installation space and the specified suppression resistance. For assemblies with a wire, also check the length and connection type required by the system.

Choose the replacement part by its application

Before buying, identify whether you need a spark plug, a separate cap or an assembly with a wire. Check the compatibility and product details, then compare them with the part number used on your motorcycle and its manufacturer’s instructions.

Making the right choice requires each component’s specifications to match the ignition system. Keep the installation and maintenance instructions for your chosen part and inspect the condition of the connections when replacing these components.
