K&N: filters, air intakes and care for your motorcycle’s filtration system

K&N has its roots in Californian motorcycling and the work of Ken Johnson and Norm McDonald, whose initials gave the brand its name. K&N was established as a filter company in 1969, following its founders’ experience with motorcycles and racing. Developing a washable, reusable filter element made from oiled cotton shaped its specialization in filtration. Its motorcycle range now brings together air and oil filters, air intake systems and products to care for the filter element.

K&N air filters include replacement elements for the original airbox and designs intended for different intake configurations. Many High-Flow filters use oiled cotton gauze and can be reused with the appropriate maintenance. The frame shape, seating surfaces and mounting system must match the intended installation. For models whose installation depends on dimensions, also check the inlet, measurements and available space: the universal designation does not mean they fit every installation.

The K&N oil filter range offers cartridge elements and filters with a housing, depending on the application. Their role is to capture contaminants in the lubricant circulating through the engine. Some Wrench-Off part numbers feature a nut to make removal easier; it should not be assumed that every design includes one. Choose the part number by its exact application, connection type and manufacturer’s guidance, observing your motorcycle’s replacement intervals.

K&N air intake systems bring together solutions that, depending on the part number, combine the filter with specific intake components. Ranges such as AirCharger and Street Metal have their own configurations and contents. Before choosing, check the application, included parts and the assembly’s installation and use requirements. Not every system shares the same mounting points or requirements, and one part number’s performance results cannot be applied to the entire brand.

K&N pre-filters and wraps complement certain filters and installations. Drycharger and PreCharger are among the solutions available in the range, with designs that must be selected according to the filter they cover. A wrap is an accessory to the system and does not replace the filter element or its maintenance. Compare the shape, size and compatible part number before adding it to your installation.

For reusable filter-element care, K&N cleaning and recharging products include Power Kleen cleaners and Recharger kits. K&N air filter oil is intended to treat the corresponding filter media; it is not engine lubricating oil. Follow each filter’s cleaning, drying and application instructions. Do not apply the same procedure indiscriminately to every material or to oil filters.
